Head Start’s Lasting Benefits

This article provides an overview and evaluation of research on Head Start, discussing the implications of this research as it applies to the debate surrounding reauthorizing the federal program. The authors conclude this review of research finds mixed, but generally positive, evidence regarding Head Start’s long-term benefits. W. Steven (Steve) Barnett is a Board of Governors Professor and the founder and Senior Co-Director of the National Institute for Early Education Research (NIEER) at Rutgers University. Dr. Barnett’s work primarily focuses on public policies regarding early childhood education, child care, and child development.
