The Costs of Being a Child Care Teacher
Revisiting the Problem of Low Wages

While the demand for quality child care and preschool education continues to increase, benefits and pay for child care workers and preschool teachers remains low. This article, published in Volume 20, Number 1 of Educational Policy, looks at how historical and cultural contexts have contributed to minimal pay for these employees and how low wages impact the quality of child care. The author concludes with a summary of issues that policymakers and child care advocates should keep in mind as they search for solution to the low wage problem.
